Infonetics bullish on Carrier Ethernet market, boosts 2015 forecast
Infonetics Research says that Carrier Ethernet equipment sales trends have exceeded the company’s expectations. The market research firm has upped its forecast for its current forecast period as a result."The Carrier Ethernet equipment market continues to grow strongly, so much so that we've increased our long-term forecast from $37.5 billion to $40.2 billion by 2015,” reports Michael Howard, principal analyst for carrier networks and co-founder of Infonetics Research. “Some market segments are growing faster while others are slowing faster than we originally anticipated. The largest downward changes are in the Ethernet microwave and VDSL equipment segments, and the largest upward change is in the hot Carrier Ethernet switch segment."The space has proven recession proof so far. Global sales of Carrier Ethernet equipment this year are expected to be up 15.7% year on year in 2011, reaching $32.0 billion. This increase comes after a year-on-year jump of 30.5% in 2010. The fact that service providers are spending a significant portion of their capex on such gear has helped the market. For example, the expected 15.7% increase in equipment sales this year comes against a back drop of an anticipated overall telecom capex increase of only 6%.Drivers for service provider interest in Carrier Ethernet equipment include the need to accommodate growing consumer, business, and mobile backhaul traffic, particularly video. Equipment benefiting most from this trend include routers, Carrier Ethernet switches, and optical gear. Together, these equipment categories compose more than two-thirds of the total Carrier Ethernet market.Infonetics says Cisco tops the Carrier Ethernet switch market with 45% of worldwide revenue, well ahead of potential competitors. ADVA Optical Networking and Ciena lead the Ethernet access device (EAD) market, which Infonetics marks as a fast-growing segment.

Datwyler completes FTTH pilot for Zurich electricity company
Datwyler Cables says it has successfully completed an FTTH pilot project for Zurich electricity company ewz. Starting in October 2010, Datwyler connected 106 buildings with 1400 residential units in the Hardstrasse area of Zurich, Switzerland. In its capacity as a turnkey project supplier Datwyler carried out on-site analysis, drew up the design proposal, delivered the requisite system, and – in collaboration with certified partners on the ground – carried out the installation, documentation, and maintenance of the new infrastructure. So what was constructed? The first thing when connecting fiber optics to all 106 buildings was to sink nine telecom shafts and route approximately 38 km of subducts through the existing pipe system, the company explains. These interconnect the shafts with the main optical distribution board at the point of presence (PoP). The installation companies used microtubes between the shafts and the individual optical premises.The contract also involved blowing fiber-optic cables into the pipes and all the requisite splicing and connecting work. The PoP and the telecom shafts are interconnected by over 8 km of feeder cable. Around 20 km of Datwyler’s newly developed S-Micro cable were used for the drop connections from the shafts to the buildings.At the same time, as part of the excavation work and in parallel to the FTTH build, main terminals and main electrical connection boxes were replaced in buildings with old electrical systems.As the lead contractor, Datwyler delivered the project in close cooperation with local civil engineers, telecom assembly companies, installation and splicing contractors. “Construction work was completed in March 2011 thanks to Datwyler’s expert planning and extensive project experience, and the turnkey project was handed over to ewz on time,” the company said.

Allstream national broadband network uses Ciena packet-optical transport platforms
Canada’s Allstream Inc., a division of MTS Allstream Inc., which itself is a wholly owned subsidiary of Manitoba Telecom Services Inc., has deployed a pan-Canada broadband network using platforms from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN).Allstream runs a national broadband and fiber-optic network that spans nearly 30,000 km. The Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platforms in Allstream’s network are capable of 100-Gbps operation. However, neither Allstream nor Ciena have indicated whether the business services provider plans to use that capability right away.Allstream plans to use the network to offer managed wavelength services to support data center, financial institution, and government customers. In addition to the packet-optical transport systems, Allstream also will use Ciena’s network management software.“Our customers are asking for higher speed wavelength services to facilitate data center connectivity, storage replication, cloud services, and other bandwidth-intensive applications and services,” says Mike Strople, CTO at MTS Allstream. “By using Ciena’s industry-leading coherent optical technology, we’re able to cost-effectively provide the performance and resiliency our customers demand to ensure their critical applications have the scale and capacity needed for their day-to-day business activities.”Ciena says it now has shipped more than 9,000 coherent 40G/100G line interfaces to approximately 100 customers worldwide, with more than 9.0 million km of coherent-enabled fiber connections deployed.
