Orange launches symmetrical 100-Mbps Fibre Pro service via FTTH
Orange says it will leverage its fiber to the home (FTTH) network to offer “Fibre Pro,” a symmetrical 100-Mbps service. The French communications services provider will target the offering primarily at small businesses and high-end “professionals” in its home market who require high speeds to access cloud-based services.Fibre Pro service includes fixed-line telephony, Internet, and television, as well as such features as a personalized URL, a fixed IP address, an “e-mail for professionals” service, and digital fax. Orange also will offer technical assistance for setting up the network in customer offices as well as dedicated customer support.Prices for the service will start at 69 euros per month with a 12-month commitment. The price includes communications to fixed-line telephones and mobile devices in France and abroad.Orange also reiterated its goal to roll out the FTTH network on which Fibre Pro is based to 3,600 French municipalities (communes) across 220 agglomerations by 2015.

BT Openreach includes Scotland in next fiber roll-out phase
Openreach, the arm of BT in charge of broadband services, has announced plans to extend its fiber-based infrastructure to another 178 exchanges – including 33 in Scotland. Most of these exchanges should see fiber-enabled "superfast broadband" services in 2012. The new roll out should reach more than 1.8 million homes and businesses, Openreach estimates. The new exchanges bring the amount of Openreach’s commercial footprint to see fiber to approximately 80%. This footprint will cover two-thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014, Openreach states. Meanwhile, more than 6 million homes and businesses already have access to either fiber to the home (FTTH) or fiber to the cabinet (FTTC), the company asserts. The new roll out will reach such major cities in Scotland as Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.Said Olivia Garfield, CEO of Openreach, “We continue to make tremendous strides with our fiber program. Super-fast broadband is already within reach of more than six million premises today and we are on track to pass ten million premises next year. “Our ambitions do not stop there. We will make fiber available to two-thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014 and we want to go even further. It is important that as many premises as possible have access to fiber and so we will bid for the BDUK [Broadband Delivery UK] funds that are available. Our experience in deploying fiber networks at scale and the fact that our open, wholesale network allows competition to thrive in an area makes Openreach an ideal partner for these local/regional broadband initiatives.” Openreach says the current average downstream speed on its fiber-enabled broadband network is 6.8 Mbps, based on the Ofcom Broadband Speeds Report issued this past July. However, Openreach says its mainstream fiber broadband offering can deliver up to 40 Mbps, a top-end speed that it will roughly double in 2012. It also will offer 300-Mbps services in certain locations next spring.

GigOptix ships 14G VCSEL driver and receiver amplifier arrays
GigOptix, Inc. (OTCQX:GGOX) says it has started high-volume production of 14G VCSEL drivers and receiver amplifier arrays for short-reach parallel optical interconnects. The firm says the products are now shipping to Tier 1 customers making active optical cables (AOCs) for the datacom, avionics, and consumer markets. The 14-Gbps per channel chipsets come in 4- and 12-channel versions to address the market for next-generation InfiniBand Fast Data Rate (FDR) active optical cables operating at aggregate data rates up to 168 Gbps as well as 40-Gigabit Ethernet and 100-Gigabit Ethernet transceivers.GigOptix’s chipset comprises a four-channel HXT5104 VCSEL driver and HXR5104 receiver amplifier chip set and a 12-channel HXT5112 VCSEL driver and HXR5112 receiver amplifier chip set. These chipsets are designed to enable power consumption of less than 450 mW for a 40G link over 100 m, and reduce costs by minimizing the number of components required to make a transceiver, the company claims. The HXT/R5 family incorporates programmable equalization and pre-emphasis circuitry to maintain signal integrity over various trace lengths. It also provides fully programmable control via integrated analog to digital convertors and digital to analog convertors, over an industry-standard 2-wire interface."This year has brought exciting progress of our parallel optics line," said Dr. Raluca Dinu, general manager and vice president of the optics product line at GigOptix. "After successful design wins into major Tier 1 customers, we have finally gone into full production with the HXT/R51 series chipset. The requirements from our customers for reliable, high-performance, low-power, and cost-effective solutions have been fulfilled by our unique chip set solution that addresses current and future datacom short reach needs." Analyst firm LightCounting forecasts that shipments of active optical cables will increase from 250,000 units in 2012 to 400,000 units in 2014.
