Argentina’s Claro offers 50-Mbps via FTTH
Argentine service provider Claro, a subsidiary of America Movil, has complemented its mobile services with an FTTH-enabled wired broadband service that includes Internet at up to 50 Mbps. The new service is available in Moron, Vicente Lopez, Avellaneda, and Berazategui. The fixed-line broadband offering includes 1, 3, 5, 10, 30, 40, and 50 Mbps tiers. Claro says it will further expand its fiber network beyond greater Buenos Aires. The FTTH network currently passes 300,000 households. In addition to Internet access, Claro also will provide one or two lines of telephone service, as well as such features as call waiting, call forwarding, conference services, and antivirus and anti-spam.

ANTEL taps ZTE for GPON in Uruguay
ZTE Corp. says that Uruguay’s Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (ANTEL) will use its GPON equipment in a nationwide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) deployment that will provide services to approximately 300,000 subscribers. ANTEL is Uruguay’s largest fixed-line operator as well as its biggest mobile carrier, with a 95.5 per cent share of the nation’s broadband market as of June 2010. ANTEL hopes to provide Internet data rates as high as 100 Mbps via the new GPON FTTH network.ANTEL will use the GPON network to provide broadband services in a variety of forms, including FTTH, FTTB, backhaul, and enterprise. ZTE says it will provide its ZXA10 C300, which can be upgraded to NG PON and WDM-PON technologies. "ZTE has successfully cooperated with ANTEL in a number of areas, including home gateways and cellphones,” said ZTE Vice President Xu Ming. “With our understanding of the Uruguayan telecoms market and our experience deploying more than 100 million lines of xPON across the globe, our goal is to build this project into a model deployment for South America that is scalable worldwide."

Juniper Networks wins broadband stimulus contract from Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom
Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) says that Vermont independent service provider Waitsfield and Champlain Valley Telecom (WCVT) has deployed Juniper Networks routing and switching platforms as part of a network upgrade that uses funds from the broadband stimulus Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP).The network upgrade will see WCVT deploy a 10-Gigabit Ethernet network core that will support high-speed services to WCVT's residential and business customers across its more than 650 square miles of service coverage. The service provider will install the Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers as part of the project, as well as Juniper Networks EX4200 Ethernet Switches with Virtual Chassis fabric technology.
