Thailand floods wash away Opnext revenue in third fiscal quarter
Not unexpectedly, Opnext Inc. (NASDAQ: OPXT) reported February 7 that the flooding at Fabrinet’s Chokchai facility significantly curtailed revenues during its fiscal third quarter. However, senior management says that alternative production resources have come online, leading to moderately optimistic guidance for the fiscal fourth quarter.Opnext reported unaudited revenue of $53.1 million for the quarter ended December 31, 2011. That figure represented a decline of 38.3 percent from the previous quarter and 45.3 percent year-on-year. The company pointed to the flood’s impact as the main culprit. Most of Opnext’s 10-Gbps and below transceivers were produced at the Chokchai facility. That segment saw a revenue decline of 42% from the previous quarter. However, sales of products for application at 40 Gbps and higher also declined 37% sequentially. Reductions in client-side 40-Gbps and 100-Gbps product sales accounted for most of this shortfall, spurred by a decrease in carrier deployments, Harry Bosco, Opnext chairman and CEO, told analysts on a conference call February 7. He also said that Chinese systems houses continued a trend toward replacing line-side direct-detect 40-Gbps transponders from outside sources with internally developed alternatives. However, he reported that the 40-Gbps and above segment overall has shown signs of rebounding in the current quarter.EBITDA came in at negative $38.9 million, compared to negative $1.5 million for the previous quarter and negative $1.8 million for the quarter ended December 31, 2010.Bosco struck a brighter tone when discussing the future. The company has already shifted production of 10-Gbps and below products to facilities in Totsuka, Japan, and Fremont, CA. It also plans to begin using Fabrinet’s Pinehurst facility beginning this month. Meanwhile, the company also is negotiating with a second contract manufacturer it hopes to bring online quickly. As a result, the 10-Gbps production activities in Totsuka and Fremont should transfer back to contract manufacturing facilities during the June quarter.Customers have assured Bosco that once the production capacity returns to pre-flood levels, so will Opnext’s market share, he said on the call.Bosco also reported progress on a pair of important new product initiatives. He revealed that Opnext has already shipped ualification samples of its 100-Gbps coherent transponder to four customers, with others waiting in line. Meanwhile, sampling of its tunable XFP should begin this quarter, with full production following during the middle of the year."Based on our 10G production recovery plan and the improvement to date in orders for 40G and above products, we expect total revenue for the March 2012 quarter will be between $70.0 million and $75.0 million," Bosco said.

P&TLuxembourg picks Alcatel-Lucent for ultra-fast broadband
P&TLuxembourg, a telecommunications service provider in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, plans to expand ultra-fast broadband services across the country using access equipment from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU). The news comes just a few months after the carrier launched FTTH services (see "P&T Luxembourg readies September launch for LuxFibre FTTH Internet access").By expanding the availability of high-speed broadband access for consumers and businesses, P&TLuxembourg is seeking to strengthen the country’s position as one of Europe’s leading financial and trade centers, and as an attractive location for businesses of all kinds. The new fiber-based technology will provide high-bandwidth, low latency, secure, and reliable services to the financial and business sector, European Parliament, and other regulatory bodies, according to Alcatel-Lucent.Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 7360 Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) FX – the company’s highest capacity fiber access platform. The 7360 ISAM FX is the latest addition to the ISAM family of IP access products, which provides simultaneous support for the main fixed broadband delivery technologies including GPON, 10G GPON, EPON, and point-to-point fiber, and enables fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) deployment models.Serge Eiffes, head of the fixed access network department at P&TLuxembourg said, "Today, Luxembourg has an important role in the European and international financial and business system. By introducing ultra-fast broadband access, we are helping to ensure that Luxembourg maintains and strengthens its position as a global center for economic activity and realizing the government’s National ‘Ultra High Broadband Strategy.’ Alcatel-Lucent, with whom we have long collaborated around high-speed DSL, helped us to get fiber at the right pace for our business. We worked in close collaboration to assess the local market conditions, identify best practices, and choose the right technology with a seamless mix of existing copper and fiber infrastructure for maximum efficiency."Operators and governments see universal broadband as a priority for socio-economic development and as critical infrastructure for services such as e-commerce, e-healthcare, and e-learning. P&TLuxembourg will improve network reliability to support all extremely sensitive financial and business transactions that occur on its network, while exploring potential new business models and revenue opportunities that can take advantages of the enhanced network.

Genexis to debut ‘Hybrid’ home gateway
Dutch FTTH gateway developer Genexis says it plans to launch a new product line at next week’s FTTH Council Conference in Munich. The “Hybrid” home gateways offer three layers of capabilities, according to Genexis. The first provides easy fiber termination. The second layer is designed to enable network termination independent of network technology. The third layer provides end-user services. The modular platform is designed to lower FTTH deployment costs while meeting the requirements of network operators, service providers, and end users.“The first reactions from our customers have been overwhelming,” asserts Ron van Os, director of product and sales management at Genexis. “During the development, our customers immediately embraced this innovative product concept and incorporated it into their FTTH projects. As a result, we will commence shipments to the first four customers next month; more details about these strategic European FTTH projects will follow soon.”
