Ethernet over OTN interoperability subject of second OIF demo
The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) will use next month’s OFC/NFOEC conference to showcase interoperability of Ethernet transport over Optical Transport Networks (OTN). The demonstration will complement another demonstration at the show of interfaces for 100-Gbps designs (see “OIF members plan 100G interface interoperability demo”).The “OIF Interoperability 2012 – Enabling High-Speed Dynamic Services” demonstration will focus on both data- and control-plane technology. Twelve OIF member companies are participating directly in the demonstration, which is already underway. Four carriers -- Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom/Orange, KDDI, and Verizon – have hosted equipment in their labs. Vendors who have provided the equipment include ADVA Optical Networking, Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, EXFO, Huawei, Marben Products, Metaswitch, and Tellabs. In addition to these 12 participants, AT&T, China Telecom, and NTT have provided consulting services but could not host equipment, said Jim Jones of Alcatel Lucent and the OIF’s president and Networking Interoperability Working Group chair. The demonstration aims to showcase the effectiveness of updates to the existing OIF ENN-I 2.0 and UNI 2.0 Implementation Agreements (particularly the former), with extensions for both multi-layer and OTN. Within the labs, 1-Gbps and 10-Gbps Ethernet streams are injected into OTN equipment, which maps these flows into the appropriate ODU wrappers. Transport of the traffic within the labs will demonstrate data plane interoperability. The control plane kicks in when flows between labs are set up and executed.“Carriers around the world are migrating their networks from SONET/SDH to Ethernet and OTN. This combination enables operators to scale their networks for the rapid growth and volume of packet traffic while also accommodating the continued existence of TDM,” said Sterling Perrin, industry analyst for Heavy Reading. “The OIF has an important role to play in helping converge these two different but complementary technologies.”

GBI undersea cable system ready for service
Gulf Bridge International (GBI) and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. Co., say the GBI undersea cable system is ready for service. The GBI submarine fiber-optic ring network connects Qatar, the UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. It also provides onward connectivity to India and Europe, with the promise of additional connectivity “in the coming months,” according to the two parties. The GBI system offers a capacity of at least 5.18 Tbps. The self-healing ring will provide high resilience, enabling the provision of reliable, high quality of service.“Achieving this status for our cable system puts GBI one step closer toward accomplishing our mission to connect the world to the Gulf,” said Ahmed Mekky, board member and CEO, GBI, which bills itself as the Middle East’s first privately owned regional cable operator. “Our high-capacity system addresses increasing demand and will foster economic and social growth throughout all Gulf countries.”“We join GBI in marking the completion of its large scale project, which was constructed with our proprietary undersea OADM switching technology, which enhances network resiliency and flexibility,” said Debra Brask, managing director, TE SubCom. “The GBI system will immediately redefine connectivity in the Gulf region, as it links three continents and provides a crucial technological advancement to previously underserved countries.”

AppliedMicro expands OTN multiplexer chip capacity
AppliedMicro (NASDAQ: AMCC), has introduced the TPO134, an OTU2 add/ddrop multiplexer with support for 16 clients. The TPO134 offers ODU cross-connect capacity to 80 Gbps via two devices and is designed to support terabit-per-second switching capacity in packet-optical transport systems (P-OTS).The new device provides a capacity upgrade over the company’s previous generation, the TPO124/114. Based on AppliedMicro’s SoftSilicon technology, the TPO134 offers support for ODU0 and ODUflex and all standardized client mappings at speeds below 5 Gbps, according to AppliedMicro. It is provides the flexibility to enable adaptation to future client mapping and monitoring requirements. Its software application programming interface (API) is designed to make integration into target systems efficient and future feature migration. The TPOC134 version offers integrated segmentation and reassembly (SAR) and Interlocken support. The TPO134 add/drop multiplexer is available now and shipping to customers this quarter. A reference design is also available.
