Ixia to acquire Anue Systems
Network test equipment vendor Ixia says it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Anue Systems, Inc., a developer of network visibility tools, for $145 million in cash. The figure is subject to certain adjustments, including an adjustment based on the amount of Anue’s net working capital at closing. The transaction is anticipated to close in the second quarter of 2012, subject to customary closing conditions and approvals.Ixia believes that the acquisition will position it as a leading player in the rapidly growing network visibility market – a market that the company says is growing over 30 percent per year – and will enhance Ixia’s service provider presence as well as create new opportunities among enterprise customers. As more applications run in cloud networks and large data centers, service providers and large enterprises need better visibility into their application performance. Traditional monitoring approaches cannot scale successfully due to the sheer number of applications and services, and the immense amounts of traffic across wired and mobile networks, the companies assert. Anue’s Net Tool Optimizer aggregates and filters network traffic to help optimize network monitoring tool use. This efficiency helps customers to maximize IT resources, streamline network troubleshooting, and expand their network monitoring capacity, Ixia says.“Next-generation cloud providers, mobility operators, and enterprises all require network and traffic visibility to maintain quality of service across application and service delivery,” said Vic Alston, Ixia chief operating officer. “Anue's Optimizer solutions provide customers with a measurable value regarding performance, scale, and resiliency of networks, while enabling the creation of a next-generation platform for quality-of-service delivery across live networks.”In addition to the Net Tool Optimizer, Anue also offers a line of test instruments for field and lab use, including the Anue 3500 platform aimed at testing such mobile backhaul and Carrier Ethernet related elements as Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE), IEEE 1588, PTP, Circuit Emulation Services (CES, IETF SAToP, IETF CESoPSN, and ITU-T Y.1413), MPLS-TP, and Carrier Ethernet OAM. It also supplies network emulators.Founded in 2002, Anue grew revenues 51 percent in 2011 to $40.5 million and generated gross margins of 83 percent for the year. For the 12 months ended March 31, 2012, Anue generated $47.6 million in revenues. Ixia expects the transaction to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings beginning in the third quarter of 2012. Non-GAAP earnings exclude stock-based compensation, amortization of acquired intangible assets, and other non-recurring charges, net of the applicable tax effects.Stifel Nicolaus Weisel is acting as financial advisor and Bryan Cave LLP is acting as legal counsel to Ixia. MHT Partners is acting as financial advisor and Vinson & Elkins is acting as legal counsel to Anue.

Lightower adds 100 route miles to its New Jersey fiber network
Lightower Fiber Networks, a metro fiber and bandwidth provider in the U.S. Northeast, says it is working on several major expansions of its all-fiber network in central and northern New Jersey. In total, Lightower is adding over 100 route miles of new fiber network throughout the counties of Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Morris, Middlesex, and Mercer.“Lightower is aggressively building in New Jersey as we continue to see surging demand for our fiber-based networking solutions,” said Rob Shanahan, CEO of Lightower. “This expansion will benefit New Jersey’s large market of financial institutions, pharmaceutical companies, other enterprises, government agencies, and educational institutions, enabling them to connect throughout the entire Lightower footprint as well as nationwide on our long-haul network.”Lightower’s network now reaches from New Hampshire and Albany in the north, to Princeton, NJ, in the south. Additional details on the expansion routes include: Bergen County: new 27-mile loop through Paterson, Totowa, and Wayne Hudson Country: new 18-mile route from Secaucus to Bergen Essex & Morris Counties: new 12-mile loop through Madison, Morristown, and Livingston Middlesex County: new 25-mile route through Carteret, Avenel, Iselin, Metuchen, Edison, and Piscataway Middlesex & Mercer Counties: new 22-mile route through Highland Park, New Brunswick, and Princeton.Customers in the expansion areas have immediate access to Lightower’s complete suite of end-to-end fiber networking products and services including Ethernet, wavelengths, dark fiber, Internet access, video transport, private networks, and SONET.

Cortina intros quad 10G EDC with 1588v2 support
Cortina Systems, Inc. says its new CS4317E electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) PHY with IEEE 1588v2 support is the industry’s first quad-10G EDC device targeted at non-temperature controlled environments encountered in outdoor and industrial deployments. The new chip integrates IEEE 1588 Precision Timing Protocol (PTP) and MACSec security features. The support for industrial temperature operation and integration of IEEE 1588v2 capability makes the CS4317E EDC PHY an ideal candidate for Ethernet backhaul links, which use 1588 for timing synchronization between network nodes, the company claims.“Service providers are continuously looking for ways to cut cost while maintaining high service reliability,” said Scott Feller, product line director at Cortina. “Unlike data center applications where the temperatures are well controlled, cellular and industrial-grade applications require operation in extreme temperature environments. With an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C, the CS4317E enables these applications by extending the cost advantages of 10GbE to new markets.”The Cortina Systems CS4317E Industrial Temperature Quad EDC PHY with IEEE 1588v2 is a low-power, 10 Gbps PHY device with MACsec security and IEEE 1588v2 support. This device is compatible with a variety of 10G and 40G (4×10G) line-side optical modules, as well as both passive and active copper interconnects. The CS4317E provides electronic dispersion compensation capability on the receive SFI interface that meets the requirements of SFF8431 linear interface, 10GBase-ZR, and IEEE 802.3ba nPPI specifications. It also supports 10G/8G/4G/2G/1G Fibre Channel data rates and rate negotiation. For CR4 and CR10 direct attach cables, the auto negotiation and training specified by IEEE 802.3ba is supported. The device is fully autonomous and does not require external processors to control the initial convergence or the dynamic adaption of the dispersion compensation. The CS4317E supports both serial XFI and RXAUI host interfaces, and is compliant to the IEEE 802.3ba nAUI specifications. The device is now sampling.
