ElectroniCast: APAC drives growth in fusion splicer market
ElectroniCast Consultants has released a new report covering the worldwide market for fiber-optic fusion splicers. The report provides a review of 2011 and a five-year forecast (2012-2016) of the use of fusion splice machines – specialized instruments used to join optical fibers to each other.Last year, the Asia Pacific region (APAC) led the market in the consumption of fiber-optic fusion splicers, and use in the region is forecast to grow at an average annual growth rate of 20% over the next five years, according to the eport. The growth will be driven by countries throughout the region that are bringing fiber closer to the drop-areas (FTTx), especially China, as well as by the use of fusion splice machines in the manufacturing of fiber-optic components and devices, which is concentrated in the region.According to ElectroniCast, the elecommunications sector accounts for 55.7% of the worldwide consumption of fiber-optic fusion splicers. The use of fusion splicers to manufacture fiber-optic devices holds onto second place with 16.6% of the market.Although currently just 9.9% of the worldwide market, the use of fusion splicers in private enterprise networks is forecast to increase at an average annual growth rate of 14.7% over the next five years. Consumption of fusion splice equipment in cable TV, military/aerospace, and various specialty applications is also quantified in the report (see figure below).Fiber-optic fusion splicer global consumption in 2012 by end-use application.ElectroniCast’s Fiber Optic Fusion Splicer Global Market Forecast & Analysis (May 2012) is available immediately, for $4,800. The study covers the use of fusion splice machines for fiber-optic communication and in manufacturing of components for selected communication applications.

Telefonica to bring FTTP to Madrid this year
Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says that Norvado, a telecommunications provider serving business and residential customers in northwest Wisconsin, has used the systems developer’s MXK platform in a new FTTx GPON deployment. The build out will cover 30 percent of Norvado's customer base in the rural counties of Bayfield, Douglas, Ashland and Sawyer.Norvado has been a Zhone customer since 2008. "Zhone's MXK multi-service access platform and its complementary offerings combine to deliver outstanding IP video, voice, and broadband data to our customers," asserted Jeff Lee, plant manager for Norvado. "We chose Zhone's MXK platform to pair with our already-established bonded ADSL and xDSL networks, for the increased density, scale, and performance. Zhone offers a proven multi-service solution designed around IP transmission. Its ability to deliver any card, any slot and any service supporting any access technology is precisely what we needed to address our expansion needs."Zhone says it has deployed more than 3,000 of its MXK platforms with more than 150 service providers globally. This translates to an FTTx customer growth rate of more than 450 percent in the three-year period from January 2009 to January 2012. Total subscriber capacity supported by these deployments now exceeds 20 million.

GigOptix samples linear quad driver for 400 Gbps
GigOptix, Inc. (NYSE MKT: GIG) says it is delivering engineering samples of its GX62472, a surface-mounted technology (SMT) Mach Zehnder modulator (MZM) quad linear driver designed with integrated GPPO outputs for 400-Gbps DWDM metro and long-haul optical transmitters. The company says it designed the driver in cooperation with its Tier 1 customers to address 400-Gbps quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) requirements. GigOptix lists the following as key features of the GX62472:Data rates up to 32 Gbaud for use in 400-Gbps QAM icationsCoplanar differential inputs compatible with industry surface-mounted DSPs GPPO-connectorized outputs atible with commercially available 100-Gbps DP-QPSK MZMs Low RMS jitter degradation “Excellent” linearity Single-ended output up to 6 Vpp Integrated temperature sensor and bias -T networks Available gain control and peak detector.“We are very excited to announce the successful engineering introduction of our first 400G MZM driver, the GX62472,” commented Andrea Betti-Berutto, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of GigOptix. “The solution integrates GigOptix’s high-performance linear MMIC designs in a compact form factor suitable for use in both line cards and transponders. The GX62472 integrates an SMT-to-GPPO transition in the package that simplifies customers’ designs, shrinking the system size and saving costs by reducing the labor required to manufacture the system. Moreover, the coplanar differential inputs ensure excellent high-speed electrical signal integrity between the DSP and the driver, while the single ended GPPO connector ensures optimal coupling of the amplified electrical signals with the optical modulator.”
