AFL combines OTDR, connector inspection and cleaning in NOYES FlexTester PRO Kits
AFL says its new NOYES FlexTester PRO Kits combine a FlexTester multi-function optical tester with the FOCIS Fiber Optic Connector Inspection System and cleaning supplies in a hard-shell carry case. Each kit includes a user-specified, handheld OFL280 or FLX380 FlexTester singlemode OTDR with integrated optical laser source, optical power meter, and visual fault locator. FOCIS includes the DFS1 Digital Fiberscope, a fiber optic connector video-inspection probe with USB interface, and the DFD1 handheld touch tablet. Since FOCIS includes its own handheld display, OTDR testing and connector inspection tasks can proceed in parallel, AFL says."With its OTDR and integrated power meter, the FlexTester can rapidly detect and locate the source of excess loss or reflections within an installed optical cable," explains Michael Scholten, senior product marketing manager at AFL. "The FOCIS probe and display can confirm if contamination or connector damage is the cause."FlexTester PRO kits additionally include One-Click Cleaners for fast, easy dry-cleaning of connector ends even when mounted inside bulkhead adapters. Cleaning fluid and absorbent cleaning sticks are included in the kit for more stubborn contamination. Both the FlexTester and FOCIS enable network installers to document network conditions before and after maintenance activities. FlexTesters save OTDR trace and event table results in industry-standard .SOR files. FOCIS supports image capture and save, and provides an image-pairing display capability that enables users to compare connector end-face images before and after cleaning.AFL's TRM Test Results Manager software also is included in FlexTester PRO kits and may be used to prepare customized, professional reports from uploaded OTDR, OPM, and FOCIS test results.

Hibernia Atlantic offers low-latency connection to New Jersey trading site
Hibernia Atlantic says it has put into service a new low-latency route between 165 Halsey and 1400 Federal Boulevard in New Jersey. Cross River Fiber provided the fiber-optic infrastructure.“Our initial customers have been pleasantly surprised to find the actual latency on the new route was lower than expected,” states Joseph Hilt, senior vice president of financial services for Hibernia Atlantic.“This was a true team effort, with Cross River and Hibernia reviewing every aspect of construction to the highest standards,” adds Michael Sevret, executive vice president and chief strategy officer for Cross River Fiber. “If something wasn’t perfect, we went back and did it over. No detail was overlooked.”The route uses optical transport platforms from Vello Systems, which are engineered with low latency in mind. Hibernia says the platforms enable it to offer customers 10-Gbps lit services with an SLA of 239 ms RTD.“This new low-latency route marks an important milestone for Hibernia and its commitment to New Jersey,” states Kathy Perone, COO for Hibernia Atlantic. “Our deep understanding of the region and customers in the area made implementing this route possible. As Cross River Fiber is also a New Jersey-based company with proven technical capabilities, selecting their network services for the new route was an easy decision for our team. In addition, our team selected Vello Systems because of its low-latency infrastructure systems with high port densities and for its robust technology roadmap – all affording Hibernia key competitive advantages.”

Verizon boosts top FiOS FTTH speed to 300 Mbps
Verizon says it will wait to announce the price of each new offering until June as well. The new speeds will be offered in standalone and bundled packages."The ways we used the Internet and watched TV over the past 10 to 15 years have dramatically shifted," said Bob Mudge, president of Verizon's consumer and mass market business unit. "With the emergence of smartphones, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, tablets, and gaming consoles that also serve as over-the-top devices, consumers need more bandwidth to receive the highest-quality experience."In a shot at the way cable MSOs provide bandwidth via hybrid fiber/coax networks and DOCSIS, Verizon said in a press release that its FTTH-enabled network “will provide customers with sustained speed and reliability of service, in contrast to intermittent speed boosts offered by cable-company competitors whose networks, unlike Verizon's, are not all-fiber optic.”"Our top FiOS speed will be twice as fast as anything America has ever seen," said Mike Ritter, chief marketing officer for Verizon's consumer and mass market business unit. "High-speed Internet no longer is just for techies, as more than half of our residential consumers already use at least a 20-Mbps Internet connection. Streaming online video on an all-fiber-optic connection providing faster speeds is better and more reliable during peak Internet usage hours."As recently as 2005, video was less than 10 percent of Web traffic," Ritter added. "By the end of this year, we expect it to be 50 percent, growing to 90 percent in just a few years."Verizon says “the majority” of its customers – those connected via GPON rather than BPON -- will have access to the two fastest-speed options of 150 and 300 Mbps. At least some customers with BPON connections who “qualify” for GPON connections can have their BPON ONUs replaced with GPON equivalents to receive the top-speed services.
