Ridgeville Telephone chooses ADTRAN for fiber network expansion
Ridgeville Telephone Co. of Northwest Ohio will use ADTRAN Inc.’s (NASDAQ:ADTN) Optical Networking Edge (ONE) line for a multifaceted network upgrade. Ridgeville plans to extend the transport backbone for its 200-mile fiber-optic network, expand its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) footprint, and roll out Carrier Ethernet services in the region.ADTRAN says Ridgeville selected its ONE capabilities to provide edge-based packet optical transport with an integrated service delivery option. The capabilities enable both FTTH and Carrier Ethernet service delivery. Ridgeville will target the latter at its own business Ethernet customers as well as potential targets for its wholesale services, including Tier 1 mobile operators sharing the same fiber facilities. ADTRAN says its Advanced Operational Environment (AOE) ServiceMonitor will aid Ridgeville by troubleshooting network issues with tools that provide reporting of SLA compliance status and ITU-T Y.1731-based performance statistics.“ADTRAN’s reputation in the industry is unparalleled, and their solutions enable us to launch next generation services while maintaining our incumbent services which allows us to capitalize on new market opportunities and maximize our network assets,” said David Gobrogge, assistant manager at Ridgeville Telephone. “The ADTRAN ONE solution provides the scalability and flexibility we need to support the growing bandwidth demand for wholesale transport, premium residential, and business Ethernet services.”

Cablenet of Cyprus taps Ekinops for capacity upgrade
Cablenet Communication Systems Ltd. of Cyprus has purchased the Ekinops 360 optical transport platform to increase the capacity of its optical network, according to the systems vendor. The 360 platform’s ability to support bidirectional transport over a single optical fiber will improve the efficiency of Cablenet’s network, Ekinops asserts.Cablenet, which began as a cable-TV provider in 2003, decided several years ago to expand into fixed telephony and Internet access services. In 2007 it launched the first triple-play package in its market. Since then, Cablenet has invested in both international capacity and domestic networks to enhance its offerings to residences and businesses.The Ekinops 360 transport system was designed to transport large volumes of 10G services over a single fiber. It is also capable of transmitting long distances without in-line amplifiers. The combination of these two capabilities allows Cablenet to signficantly reduce its transport infrastructure costs, Ekinops says."We selected Ekinops because of the company's ability to provide what we needed over a single fiber," agreed Antonis Vasili, technical director for Cablenet, "and we have been very pleased with its performance. Installation of the equipment went flawlessly and it has turned out to be a very robust and cost-effective solution both from a capex as well as opex standpoint."

Opnext turns away private equity bid to unseat Oclaro
Optical communications components and subsystems vendor Opnext, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPXT) has revealed it received an unsolicited bid from a private equity firm hoping to top the bid Opnext’s board has already accepted from Oclaro (see “Oclaro, Opnext to merge” and "Confident Oclaro, Opnext savor future"). However, the board has turned aside the offer.The private equity firm, which Opnext did not identify other than describe the firm as “technology focused,” offered $1.40 per share of all of the company’s issued and outstanding capital stock on May 23, subject to the performance of due diligence.However, “after careful consideration and consultation with its financial and legal advisors and with Opnext management,” in the words of a press release, Opnext’s board decided the proposed deal wasn’t more attractive than Oclaro’s.Meanwhile, Opnext said progress had been made towards successfully closing the merger with Oclaro. The deal still requires the approval of stockholders of both companies, but Opnext management expressed confidence that the transaction will close early in the third calendar quarter of 2012.
