Swisscom, Energie Wasser Bern agree on Berne FTTH/FTTB network
DECEMBER 26, 2010 -- Energie Wasser Bern and Swisscom have reached an agreement to extend the City of Berne's fiber-optic network into city households. The agreement will see 90 percent of buildings in the city with fiber to the home/business (FTTH/FTTB) access by 2017. Swisscom will bear 60 percent and Energie Wasser Bern 40 percent of the investments needed for constructing the network.Swisscom reached a similar agreement with IWB to fund an FTTH/FTTB network in Basel (see “IWB, Swisscom join for FTTP in Basel”)By signing the cooperation agreement, Swisscom and Energie Wasser Bern have committed themselves to work together to construct Berne's fiber-optic network. Both companies will be responsible for laying the cables. Swisscom will connect 30 percent of households to the network and will also be responsible for laying the fiber-optic cables between the neighborhood cabinets and the telephone exchanges. Energie Wasser Bern will build the fiber-optic network for 70 percent of the city.Constructing the network will cost CHF 172 million ($178.7 million). Both partners have granted each other long-term usage rights for the fibre-optic network.Four fibers will be laid per household. Swisscom and Energie Wasser Bern will receive one fiber each for their sole use. The others will be assigned as required or made available to other companies prepared to invest in them.It is expected that by the end of 2011, more than a third of Berne's residents will be able to use the new services. By 2017, 90 percent of properties will have a fiber-optic connection, and by 2020, the network will cover the entire city of Berne, the two companies assert.

Broadband stimulus winner Hardy Telecommunications chooses Zhone MXK
JANUARY 4, 2011 -- Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says it has expanded its relationship with Hardy Telecommunications, Inc. to include a new broadband-stimulus funded project that, in cooperation with Zhone’s partner Goldfield Telecom, will provide both GPON fiber and copper connectivity to the underserved rural mountain communities of Hardy County, WV. Starting in early 2011, the community-owned telecommunications cooperative will use Zhone’s MXK intelligent Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) capabilities and Zhone network interface device (zNID) optical network terminals (ONTs) to deliver ultrahigh speed Internet access, VoIP and video services as part of the Hardy OneNet Fiber to the Home (FTTH) project. The entire project will be funded by the $34.8 million in broadband stimulus grants secured during the first and second rounds of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) disbursements. “Given the significant business growth we’ve experienced since first partnering with Zhone in 2009, they were a natural fit to consider for the access needs of our new broadband stimulus project,” noted Scott Sherman, general manager of Hardy Telecommunications. “After extensive evaluation, we realized that Zhone’s MXK platform best met our requirements for a high capacity backplane and delivered the switching capacity necessary to meet the high bandwidth capabilities and service quality we have set for the Hardy FTTH network.”

Swisscom and Groupe E partner for Fribourg fiber network
JANUARY 4, 2011 By Stephen Hardy -- Switzerland’s Competition Commission is reviewing a proposed joint venture between Swisscom and electrical utility Groupe E focused on extending fiber-optic network connections in the canton of Fribourg. The proposed partnership is the third pairing with a utility that Swisscom has announced in recent weeks. Fiber to the home (FTTH) connections would be part of the network extension.Swisscom and Groupe E, which is based in the western half of Switzerland, submitted the joint venture contract to the Competition Commission last autumn. The two parties say they expect a decision from the commission by this May.The proposed joint venture will see Swisscom pick up 60% of the investment, with “other partners” assuming the remaining 40%. The identity of the other partners was not revealed. The canton of Fribourg was named as another partner in the joint venture.Swisscom recently announced similar partnerships with Energie Wasser Bern (see “Swisscom, Energie Wasser Bern agree on Berne FTTH/FTTB network”) and IWB (see “IWB, Swisscom join for FTTP in Basel”) to build FTTH/FTTB networks in other parts of Switzerland.As in these previously announced pacts, the Fribourg network extension would see the connection of four fibers in each area of use (flat, house, or commercial premises) to provide access for competitive carriers.
