Euronews: UK Spooks Back to Haunt Huawei
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , TeliaSonera AB (Nasdaq: TLSN) and MegaFon loom large in today's sprint through the EMEA headlines.
1.Fresh from its ordeal at the hands of the U.S. House of Representatives, Huawei looks like it could be in for a good going-over by the U.K.'s all-parliamentary intelligence and security committee, according to a report in The Guardian, citing "Whitehall sources." Huawei, an important supplier and partner to a number of British operators and which has just announced it is moving its U.K. HQ to Reading, was looked at by this same committee a couple of years ago but received the all-clear. 2.Nordic operator TeliaSonera has issued a statement denying that it has brought forward the hunt for CEO Lars Nyberg's replacement, saying it had started its search before the current controversy over a 3G license deal in Uzbekistan, reports Reuters. In a statement, Chairman Anders Narvinger sought to scotch the rumors, saying: "Finding a replacement for a chief executive at one of Sweden's largest companies is a long process which the board initiated before the current debate started." 3.MegaFon's plan to launch an initial public offering (IPO) on the London Stock Exchange has hit a snag after Goldman Sachs & Co. pulled out of its role as an adviser on the IPO because of concerns over corporate governance issues, reports the Financial Times (subscription required). Comments by MegaFon's controlling shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, are thought to have set the alarm bells ringing.
4.They'll need plenty of chairs, vol-au-vents and possibly security guards at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) headquarters in Geneva today, as scores of rival operators and vendors attend a Patent Roundtable, a gathering intended to address the growing problem of patents litigation in the telecom sphere, particularly with regard to so-called RAND (reasonable and non-discriminatory)–based patent policies. The ITU is hoping the "neutral venue" -- in Switzerland, geddit? -- will help, but we can all expect the exchanges inside the hall to be more heated than the weather. (See Making Sense of the Handset Patent Plays.)
5.Option NV (Euronext: OPTI; Nasdaq Europe: OPIN), the Belgian wireless modem maker, is looking at ways of obtaining at least €5 million (US$6.4 million) in fresh funding as it seeks a path back to "profitability and sustainable growth in the near term." (See Option Seeks Fresh Funds, Unveils CloudGate and Option Drops Complaints Against Huawei.)
6.Lattelecom Group , a Latvian cable operator, has adopted Thomson Video Networks 's ViBE VS7000 multi-screen video platform for its Web and mobile TV services, as well as SD, HD, and 3-D IPTV offerings. (See Lattelecom Encodes With Thomson.)
7.Telecom Italia SpA (NYSE: TI) is facing a lawsuit from a minority shareholder in TIM Brasil for exercising its controlling power over the Latin American operator "abusively," reports Reuters.
8.Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT) is to collaborate with Digi International (Nasdaq: DGII), a Minnesota-based machine-to-machine (M2M) specialist, in a deal that will see the German carrier's industrial-grade SIM cards integrated into Digi's wireless gateways and routers, and its M2M SIM management features introduced to the iDigi Device Cloud.
