Wightman Telecom selects Enablence for IP voice upgrade
JANUARY 26, 2011 -- Wightman Telecom has selected the Enablence BroadAccess Multi-Service Access Platform (MSAP) from Enablence Technologies Inc., a supplier of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) equipment and multi-service access platforms for triple-play, residential, and business services and optical components and subsystems for access, metro, and long-haul markets. The MSAP was chosen for the delivery of residential voice, video, and data services.The Enablence upgrade to Wightman Telecom's legacy Digital Central Office (DCO) infrastructure helps the company maximize its investments in existing copper lines as it continues its upgrade to next-generation, FTTH services across Ontario.Wightman is an Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC), with an additional Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) business unit that provides Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Interexchange Carrier (IXC) services, delivering voice, data, and video to 23,000 residential and business customers in 17 southwestern Ontario-based exchanges. Wightman has deployed the Enablence platform as its fiber-based network infrastructure for the next-generation CLEC unit, and will now tap the BroadAccess solution to modernize the Outside Plant (OSP) infrastructure of its copper-based voice lines."We were in need of an affordable solution that would allow us to maximize ROI on our existing copper infrastructure while keeping an eye on future fiber investments," explains Tom Sullivan, vice president and general manager of Wightman Telecom. Forty-one UK market towns on BT’s next super-fast broadband list
JANUARY 13, 2011 By Stephen Hardy -- BT has unveiled a list of 41 “market towns” in which it will deploy its fiber to the cabinet (FTTC) super-fast broadband infrastructure. BT plans to connect approximately 300,000 businesses and consumers with FTTC and offer broadband speeds of up to 40 Mbps by Spring 2012. The roster of FTTC towns includes three in Scotland (Bathgate, Dalkeith, and Edinburgh Musselburgh) and one in Wales (Pontycymmer). The full list is available on BT’s website.BT heralded the roll out, part of a £2.5 billion fiber initiative, last month when it announced it had identified up to 40 “selected market towns where premises and cabinets are suitably clustered will now be eligible for fiber deployment.” (See “BT to trial gigabit FTTP broadband.”)However, BT now says that it is likely it will not connect everyone in these communities to its FTTC network for what it called “technical and economic reasons.” It described Openreach, its broadband deployment arm, as “very keen” to negotiate with local governments on the matter, likely looking for economic concessions that would improve the business case for reaching those left out.“We want to extend the fibre footprint and the benefits the technology brings to more rural areas,” said Steve Robertson, CEO of Openreach. “However, in many cases, this will require a collective effort. An infrastructure project on this scale -- arguably as important to the future of the UK as the road or rail networks -- can only be done in partnership. We’re keen to talk to public and private sector organizations about how this can be achieved.”

TDS taps Calix for VDSL2 upgrade
JANUARY 5, 2011 -- TDS Telecommunications Corp., the nation’s eighth-largest wireline communication service provider, is upgrading its infrastructure of Calix C7 Multiservice Access Platforms (MSAPs) from Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) in 20 states. Targeting 25 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream initially, TDS is using all-Ethernet VDSL2 technology to enable voice, high-speed data, and in some areas video services to over 100 communities.This initiative, which was recently rolled out to customers in Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin, will expand to 13 more states in the first quarter of 2011, reaching subscribers across hundreds of nodes embedded in nearly 150 networks.A Calix customer since 2004, TDS has deployed the Calix Unified Access portfolio across its 30-state footprint. Some of the C7s being upgraded as a part of this initiative were among the first deployed in 2004. A software upgrade and card change will enable these platforms to upgrade from from basic POTS and ATM-based ADSL services to Ethernet-based VDSL2 services.
