ADTRAN unveils Ultra Broadband Ethernet access architecture
OCTOBER 26, 2010 By Stephen Hardy -- ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) has introduced Ultra Broadband Ethernet, a new broadband network architecture that delivers a symmetric 100-Mbps Ethernet connection over copper to each of up to eight subscribers from a single ONT access node.A fiber-enabled Gigabit Ethernet connection links the ONT to the rest of the carrier’s network.Kevin Morgan, director, marketing, Carrier Networks Division, stressed in a conversation with Lightwave that the copper-based link is based on Ethernet, rather than a form of DSL. The architecture is designed to enable carriers to provide high-speed services over copper links as long as 200 m while paving the way to eventual migration to an FTTH architecture. The powering of the system is unique, Morgan asserted. Rather than requiring a dedicated power source, the ONT is powered via media adapters stationed at each subscriber site -- “Sort of like Power over Ethernet in reverse,” Morgan said. The power requirements are small, a bit more than 1 W per subscriber, Morgan added. The architecture is designed to scale to support connections up to 1 Gbps. The announcement received kudos from at least one analyst. "Communications service providers around the globe must find a cost-effective means to compete with MSOs and cable companies in the delivery of high-speed (100 Mbps and greater) services,” said David Emberley, research manager, IDC. "ADTRAN's Ultra Broadband Ethernet approach offers an alternative to traditional access infrastructure designs that lowers the CSP's operational and capital expenditure to deliver advanced services, while accelerating revenue and increasing ARPU."

Ofcom: BT must share fiber, duct, and poles
OCTOBER 8, 2010 by Stephen Hardy -- Ofcom, the UK telecommunications regulatory authority, has announced rulings designed to promote competition within the UK broadband market. Principal among them is a mandate that BT must share its broadband fiber links with competitors.BT must offer fiber access through what Ofcom described as “a dedicated virtual link” through “virtual unbundling.” It also must offer access to its ducts and poles to competitors looking to deploy their own fiber, particularly in areas where BT has no such plans.Ofcom said in a prepared statement that BT will be able to set prices for these new wholesale products at a level that “should promote investment by enabling them to make a fair rate of return reflecting commercial risk.” However, these rates also will be “subject to rules to prevent anti-competitive pricing,” Ofcom stated.BT also must provide details regarding the available capacity and quality of ducts and poles. The carrier must provide a draft reference offer covering the ducts and poles by the middle of next January.Ofcom also said it will continue to require BT to provide local loop unbundling of its copper infrastructure to competitors.Matthew Howett, lead analyst at market research firm Ovum, described the rulings as “both pragmatic and predictable.” Said Howett, “It is a well designed framework which takes into account the network infrastructure being deployed by BT across the UK and should allow sufficient scope for alternative operators looking to invest to gain access to BT’s network.”

Bijou Telephone Cooperative taps ADTRAN for broadband expansion
SEPTEMBER 29, 2010 -- ADTRAN Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says that Bijou Telephone Cooperative of eastern Colorado has selected ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform (MSAP) to extend broadband and POTS to underserved rural areas. “When we began to look at solutions for broadband expansion and POTS delivery into rural areas, the Total Access 5000 was the obvious choice,” said Reed Metzger, general manager, Bijou Telephone Cooperative. “It not only lets us roll out broadband DLC applications in a way that uniquely suits our network needs, but it also future-proofs our network, allowing us to transition to next-generation services such as fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) all from the same platform and without a forklift upgrade keeping our total cost of ownership low.” “We are pleased to strengthen our long-standing relationship with Bijou Telephone Cooperative,” said P. Steven Locke, vice president of sales, service providers, ADTRAN. “The Total Access 5000 is the latest addition to a long list of ADTRAN solutions in use with this service provider. Bijou is already seeing the operational and economic benefits of ADTRAN solutions in its transport and mobile backhaul networks. Now, they are going to experience those same benefits in the access network.”
