Calix B6 supplies broadband services for Slic Network Solutions
Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) says that broadband stimulus award winner Slic Network Solutions has chosen the Calix B6 Ethernet Service Access Node (ESAN) for the broadband stimulus project in St. Lawrence County, NY. This decision complements another Slic broadband stimulus project which serves underdeveloped broadband regions of neighboring Franklin Country. Both projects will use the B6 ESAN and 700GE family of optical network terminals (ONTs) to bring voice, data, and internet protocol television (IPTV) services to rural parts of northern New York. These two projects will service 6556 residences and 181 businesses and anchor institutions, and leverage over $33 million in funds, of which only a portion is access equipment."The advanced broadband services that these projects will bring to our region are critical to closing the digital divide that exists between those in population centers and those in rural areas," said Phil Wagschal, president at Slic. "We see Calix as a key partner to the success of these projects, as they bring advanced, scalable solutions to our region."The Slic stimulus project in St. Lawrence County consists of a $27.8 million award, and includes a $20.9 million grant and $6.9 million loan, of which only a portion is for access equipment. Slic will pull 660 miles of fiber optic cable in the county for this project, passing 5856 homes, 112 businesses, and 30 critical community institutions. Similar to the Franklin County Stimulus project, the B6 ESAN will deliver services using GPON technology, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet for sub 50 ms Ethernet Protection Switching (EPS) access transport services.Calix vendor selections by broadband stimulus winners for "last mile" and "middle mile" awards have now reached 61 different projects representing approximately $1.2 billion in Stimulus-related grants, loans, and private investment for plant engineering, materials, labor, and other costs, including access equipment.

TMS selects Calix for regional broadband initiatives
Telecom Management Services (TMS), a consortium of telecommunications companies in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, has selected the Calix Unified Access portfolio from Calix Inc. (NYSE:CALX) as its preferred access system for future projects across its expanding footprint.TMS plans to act as a catalyst to advanced broadband service deployments among telecommunications companies by combining its expertise in enabling and managing services like IPTV with the aggregate scale of its partner members, says a spokesperson.Southwest Tennessee communications service provider Millington Telephone Company and Cable TV (Millington) is the latest company in the region to join the consortium, which now includes members which in aggregate represent nearly 100,000 access lines. Calix will provide any TMS member company with additional advantages, such as volume pricing and a unified systems, operations, management, and support model."We believe that the best way for telecom companies to successfully deliver advanced broadband services is to band together and leverage common fixed costs, infrastructure, expertise, and synergies," says Trevor Bonnstetter, CEO of West Kentucky and Tennessee Telecommunications Cooperative (WK&T), a founding member of TMS. "The scale and resources required for advanced solutions like IPTV are extraordinarily challenging for a telecom company who goes it alone. On the other hand, the benefits of working together are substantial from both a business case and an operational perspective."TMS, which is composed of WK&T, Ben Lomand Telephone Cooperative, Ardmore Telephone Company, and Millington, was formed to provide management, organization, and broad-range oversight services to telecom cooperatives and companies in the Southeast region of the U.S.By standardizing on the Calix Unified Access portfolio, TMS will simplify such challenges as maintaining an inventory of spare parts, while also leveraging the Calix Management System (CMS) for common management and provisioning, and Compass Flow Analyzer for network traffic analysis and services insight."When TMS was formed in 2009, we had a vision of not only providing new business opportunities for the original member cooperatives, but of bringing advanced broadband services to the entire region," says Levoy Knowles, chairman of TMS. "As the TMS consortium has grown to include additional cooperatives and other telecom companies, as well as to form key relationships with industry leaders like Calix, the benefits of membership have become even more compelling. While TMS member companies expect to gain powerful operational and business efficiencies from their involvement with the consortium, the real winners of this initiative are going to be the subscribers to TMS-enabled services offered by each of these companies, who will benefit from a superior broadband consumer experience.""TMS member companies are challenging the conventional wisdom surrounding advanced broadband services deployments," notes John Colvin, vice president of field operations at Calix. "By combining their resources, expertise, and purchasing power, they are redefining the economics of deployment, and increasing the likelihood of an exceptional subscriber experience. Calix is proud to be a key partner to TMS, and congratulates the citizens of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama on being the beneficiaries of what we anticipate will be a powerful vehicle for superior broadband services in the region."

Zhone Technologies, Pulaski-White Rural Telephone partner on FTTx network
Zhone Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:ZHNE), a provider of FTTx network access systems, is working with Pulaski-White Rural Telephone Cooperative to build a fiber network that will support the delivery of more affordable, more reliable, high-speed Internet access, VoIP, and video services to subscribers. Pulaski-White Telephone will integrate Zhone’s MXK multi-service access node (MSAN) into its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) network. The Zhone MXK MSAN’s flexibility and ability to provide intelligent Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) and Active Ethernet (AE) connectivity in facilitating network and service upgrades to FTTH has been demonstrated in similar broadband projects, including a Midwest deployment with Alhambra-Grantfork Telephone in Alhambra, Ill.With the extreme bandwidth demands being remotely managed by the MXK platform, Pulaski-White Telephone residential customers will benefit from multiple high-definition television (HDTV) channels, high-definition digital video recorder (HD-DVR) content, and video streaming within the home.“Our 2,000 lines to residents and businesses require increasing bandwidth as user needs exceed our current capacity. Fortunately, the increased density, scale, and performance provided by the Zhone MXK, zNID ONTs and Zhone EZ Touch Provisioning address our network complexity and challenges,” says Mark Dickerson, plant manager, Pulaski-White Telephone. “We initially plan to provide our business customers, including banks, hospitals, and schools, with AE connectivity and consumers with GPON connectivity using the same MXK system without worry about bandwidth constraints or expansive cost requirements. The ability to provide multiple services off the same system was imperative for us to curtail operational costs.”The MXK’s feature set aligns well with Pulaski-White Telephone’s specific field requirements, enabling Zhone to provide optimum cost efficiency and maximum service differentiation in the operator’s network in combination with the zNID GPON Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) that will be installed at the residence and business sites to support individual subscriber service needs.“Like some of our other North American deployments, we recognized Pulaski-White Telephone needed a fiber access solution with superior scale; that was our primary goal,” explains Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. The use of the Zhone Management System (ZMS) in the Pulaski-White Telephone deployment enables seamless network management support for Zhone’s multi-service network solution. As an extension of the ZMS, Zhone EZ Touch Provisioning provides next-generation, carrier-class network management and automated service provisioning, reducing recurring operational expenditures (OPEX) by minimizing truck rolls and the need for field technicians to manually turn on subscriber-specific features at each residence or business, says a spokesperson.
