SiFotonics unveils CMOS 10G integrated optical receiver
SiFotonics Technologies Co. Ltd., a supplier of optical communications components based on the Silicon Photonics technology platform, introduces the TP1501 CMOS-based integrated optical receiver for optical communication applications.Representing another industry first for SiFotonics, the 10Gbps receiver consists of a Germanium photodetector (PD) monolithically integrated with a trans-impedance amplifier (TIA)."We are pleased to see that our leading edge technologies in Transimpedance Amplifiers, Ge/Si Photo Detectors, and advanced process engineering have made the milestone of the world's first 10G CMOS based monolithic receiver chip possible," says Dr. Dong Pan, CEO of SiFotonics.  "Furthermore, with this successful integration, our plan is to further integrate more system logic in a single chip in future product generations."TP1501 covers three key optical wavelengths: 850nm, 1310nm, and 1550nm, with the measured sensitivity at the 1310nm wavelength comparable to commercially available III-V systems. The devices are being evaluated using the ROSA (Receive Optical SubAssembly) format and are currently undergoing reliability testing.TP1501 is designed to eliminate several issues related to the traditional non-integrated PD/TIA approach. It provides PD-to-TIA wire bonds, which in turn reduces wire bonding related issues at high frequencies, as well as simplified ROSA packaging process, reduced packaging variations, and improved yields. There is no need to qualify a properly matched TIA for the PIN, which shortens development time, and ultimately, time to market. The TP1501 is expected to provide a cost-effective solution and become a key component in optical transceivers for data center communications, and Fiber channel for storage networks.

Enablence uses PICs in 8x12 Integrated Multicast Switch
Enablence Technologies, Inc. says it has leveraged photonic integrated circuits (PICs) in the development of its new 8x12 Integrated Multicast Switch (iMS). As its name implies, the iMS offers 8 input and 12 output ports to support cost-effective, reliable, flexible and scalable multicast switching applications, Enablence asserts. The iMS is designed to support development of reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs)."The new Enablence 8x12 iMS can truly help service providers achieve a pay-as-you-go service delivery goal, reducing their upfront capital expenditures and allowing for a highly scalable network design," said Jacob Sun, president of Enablence's Optical Components and Subsystems Division. "The PIC-based 8x12 iMS can also significantly reduce the cost for 100G coherent transmission systems by simplifying the drop ports architecture, a technology that will be widely deployed in the next few years. With the addition of the 8x12 switch, our family of iMS solutions now includes the choices of 4x8, 8x8, and 8x12 iMS. The add/drop port count for the switch can be further expanded up to 8x24 with this platform."

CoAdna offers 50-GHz tunable demux/mux modules
CoAdna Photonics, Inc. has introduced what it asserts is the first liquid crystal based 50-GHz 1xN Tunable DeMux/Mux (TDMX). The new TDMX is available with up to 20 ports.CoAdna’s 50-GHz TDMX is built on its proprietary LightFlow platform. The TDMX offers mux/demux functionality with hitless wavelength tunability, remote configurability, flexibility, and extremely low power consumption, CoAdna says. It can be used for colorless multiplexing and demultiplexing, particularly in next-generation colorless, directionless, and contentionless add/drop architectures and coherent detection applications.“CoAdna’s 50GHz TDMX modules will not only maintain the industry leading performance and reliability to meet our customer’s demanding requirements, but also enable the much desired colorless add and drop application for optical networks” said Dr. Jim Yuan, president and CEO of CoAdna Photonics.
