NSF, Vixar target 40-100 Gbps VCSEL
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Vixar a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I contract to demonstrate the feasibility of a composite resonator VCSEL (CRVCL) that can support a 40- to 100-Gbps serial data transmission rate.VCSELs have served as the primary optical transceiver light source for short distance (<300 meters) applications for more than a decade. However, the NSF and Vixar say that conventional VCSEL technology may top out at data rates between 20 and 30 Gbps. Straightforward design enhancement of conventional VCSELs will not satisfy the requirements, they believe. The CRVCL approach, for which Vixar has applied for a patent, avoids relaxation oscillation limitations on modulation speed through the use of a dual-cavity VCSEL operated in a push-pull configuration. The goals of the Phase I project are to fabricate such a CRVCL, demonstrate the push-pull nature of the modulation to a minimum of 20 GHz, and demonstrate the elimination or dramatic reduction in relaxation oscillations. At 40 Gbps and higher data rates, such a VCSEL would likely find application in SAN and high-performance computing, as well as use within optical interconnects within a cabinet or circuit board. These latter applications would require high speed per channel (at least 40 Gbps), very low power, high reliability, and low cost. Vixar believes the CRVCL could meet all four requirements.

UNH-IOL to provide GPON interoperability and conformance testing via TraceSpan GPON Xpert analyzer
UNH-IOL, a neutral, third-party laboratory dedicated to testing data networking technologies through industry collaboration, and broadband analysis and monitoring equipment vendor TraceSpan Communications say they will collaborate to create a testbed for GPON interoperability and conformance testing. The new test environment will enable UNH-IOL to expand its activities to include GPON testing, including among others interoperability testing according the BBF WT-255 test plan.TraceSpan's GPON Xpert analyzer will provide the test engine. The multi-layer analyzer is designed to provide full visibility to the content of all the protocols and layers in a GPON network, including MAC and OMCI layers, as well as the user traffic on the GPON in protocol layers such as Ethernet, PPP, PPPoE, IPv4, IPv6, TCP, IGMP, and HTTP. In addition, its Validation Testing mechanism will allow UNH-IOL to provide go/no-go indications about compliance with the test cases, as well as with other user-defined test cases."As UNH-IOL expands its GPON testing activities, we identified the need for a GPON analyzer as a major building block for our test environment," said Lincoln Lavoie, UNH-IOL senior engineer, broadband technologies. "As a world-recognized test lab, an architect of the BBF WT-255 Interoperability Test Plan, and a leading contributor to the BBF.247 conformance test plan, we are committed to creating the best GPON testing environment possible. We feel TraceSpan and their GPON Xpert product are a great fit in this environment and will improve the GPON testing available at the UNH-IOL."

ZTE: We own the 10G EPON market
ZTE Corp. (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ) says that as of the end of the third quarter of 2011, if you own 10G EPON equipment, you bought it from them. The company says that as of that quarter, it enjoyed a 100% share of the 10G EPON market. The company says it was the first to ship 10G EPON OLT and ONT/ONU equipment during the quarter. The shipments mark "the beginning of the era of next-generation PON,” wrote Ovum analyst Kamalini Ganguly in the firm’s Q311 FTTx quarterly market share update. “It is an important milestone in the quest for higher bandwidth capacity," she added."Our achievements in PON technology are a testament to ZTE's R&D efforts over the past several years," said ZTE Vice President Xu Ming. "We are very proud of the fact that our NG PON solutions have increased our momentum in the field.”ZTE says its total PON portfolio supports 93 million lines and over 47 million broadband ports worldwide. At the end of 2011, ZTE also won an exclusive three-year grant from China’s 863 Program to lead a group of institutions researching optical networks access and evolution technologies.Meanwhile, the company also is hard at work on NG PON2 technology. The company says it was the first vendor to launch a tunable laser-based WDM PON system in March 2009, and it developed the s first adjustable colorless transceiver ONU within the context of TWDM technology. In addition, ZTE was the chief editor of a technical OFDM-PON whitepaper it produced with FSAN Group in September 2011.
