euNetworks moves to 100 Gbps
euNetworks Group Ltd. (SGX: H23.SI) says it has upgraded its European long-haul high-speed network to support 100-Gbps wavelengths, using the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN).The bandwidth infrastructure provider’s long-haul network links 37 cities in 9 countries; euNetworks operates metro networks in 13 of the 37 cities as well. euNetworks has deployed the 100-Gbps capabilities – based on Ciena’s WaveLogic processors, which enable use of DP-QPSK with coherent detection – in routes linking Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam and Paris, as well as among Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Dublin, and Manchester. euNetworks deploys dual gateways in its major cities; combined with their mesh-based metropolitan fibre networks, this puts many data centers and customer sites within 10 km of a gateway.“We have been working closely with Ciena to bring the 100G capability to market,” said David Tomalin, CTO at euNetworks. “With Ciena’s coherent technology, we are delivering the new standard in high-capacity services to our wholesale carrier and high bandwidth consuming enterprise customers. We deeply believe in providing customers the bandwidth flexibility they need as they scale their businesses, simplifying customer connections by removing the need to implement link aggregation or complex load balancing in their networks.”“The growth potential of our combined long haul and metropolitan fiber networks are crucial to our long-term bandwidth infrastructure strategy,” added Brady Rafuse, euNetworks CEO. “Over the last year we have deployed our optical network with Ciena. This development future proofs our investment, ensuring we have the flexibility in our long-haul network that our customers demand. Ciena has demonstrated their commitment to work with us as we continue to grow our business, serving the ever-growing bandwidth requirements we see before us. I am excited for the opportunity this brings.”

3M offers Slim Lock Closure for fiber to the antenna
3M says its new Slim Lock Closure for wireless applications weatherproofs coaxial jumper cable connections on the cell tower where 7/16 DIN connectors are used. The compact closure protects connections at the antenna and remote radio unit (RRU) and complements fiber to the antenna (FTTA) installations.According to 3M, FTTA cell tower architectures require a different weatherproofing approach from the traditional tapes and mastics. The Slim Lock Closure is specifically designed with a narrow body to fit into congested areas, such as compact tower-mounted RRUs and connection-rich multi-band, multi-service antennas, 3M asserts. The hard plastic closure body snaps around the connection and latches shut, sealing out water. A compliant sealing gel inside the closure conforms to the connection and displaces air so that condensation cannot occur, 3M adds.

Corning, Lightwave open FTTXcellece Award nominations
Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) and Lightwave will honor an individual for leadership in the deployment of optical access networks in North America with the ninth annual FTTXcellence Award. The award will be presented Sept. 26 at the 2012 FTTH Conference & Expo in Dallas, Texas. This year, Corning and Lightwave will welcome Heather Gold, president of the FTTH Council North America, to the panel of judges who will determine the 2012 FTTXcellence Award recipient."The FTTXcellence Award recognizes visionaries who bring attention to major advancements in the FTTx space," said Clark Kinlin , president and CEO of Corning Cable Systems. "Corning is eager to recognize those who have been generating momentum toward the ultimate goal of bringing fiber to every business and residential subscriber.""The quality of the nominations we've seen over the years has risen tremendously," added Stephen Hardy, editorial director and associate publisher of Lightwave, which has been the leading source of technical information for optical communications strategists worldwide for more than 25 years. "This year I expect to see even more diversity as the number of applications in North America using FTTx technology continues to increase."To be eligible for the award, candidates must be nominated by a peer. Nominees may include individuals at carriers and system operators, home developers, utilities, municipalities, or other organizations that have launched an FTTx project; individuals at vendors or research organizations whose work has benefited FTTx technology development; other elected officials or other policymakers who have made a significant positive impact in the regulatory or legal arena; and other deserving individuals. Nominations can be submitted online at 2012.html by Aug. 1, 2012. The panel of judges from Lightwave, Corning, and the FTTH Council will select the winner from the submitted nominations. In addition to an awards ceremony at the FTTH Conference, the winner will be honored with a donation in his or her name to One Economy Corp., a global, non-profit organization that leverages 21st-century technology to help low-income families build assets and raise their standard of living.
