Zhone helps MLL Telecom connect 600 public sector sites in Suffolk, England
Zhone Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says it has been selected by MLL Telecom to help deliver high-speed broadband services to more than 600 public sector facilities in the county of Suffolk, England.MLL Telecom, a managed network supplier in the UK, is using Zhone's MXK and ETHX platforms for approximately two-thirds of its sites to provide Ethernet services to schools, libraries, and county council buildings. Zhone secured this deployment as a result of its partnership with UK-based systems integrator Imtech Telecom. As the British government forges ahead with its plan to upgrade the nation's Internet infrastructure by 2015, organizations throughout the UK look for cost-effective ways to roll out faster broadband services across wide area networks. For this reason, public sector organizations turn to managed network suppliers like MLL Telecom for reliable, high-speed Ethernet services. This new network deployment is significant because schools across the region are already consuming data at a rate equivalent to downloading 40 books every second. By using Zhone's platform to deliver 10-Mbps services over the existing copper infrastructure, the new technology provides a 5X increase in capacity, Zhone says."Zhone was chosen for its industry-leading access technology and high level of knowledge in the FTTx and EFM [Ethernet in the first mile] space," said Graham Keeble, head of operations for MLL Telecom. "Our objective for this project was to cost effectively deliver high-speed, reliable Ethernet services to the county of Suffolk using the existing copper infrastructure. Zhone was the perfect partner in helping us achieve this goal, because of the flexibility, scalability, and ease-of-use of its solutions."In addition to delivering significant savings and increased capacity, the new network allows MLL Telecom to deploy fiber access services, ADSL2+/VDSL2 from the same platform in the future, if required.

Infinera, Nissho show 8-Tbps transmission over dispersion-shifted fiber
Infinera Corp. (NASDAQ: INFN) and its Japanese partner, Nissho Electronics, say they have carried out a successful demonstration using the Infinera DTN-X platform to deliver 8 Tbps via superchannels across 800 km of ITU-T G.653 dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF).The companies claim the demonstration at the NET Frontier Center marks a significant achievement for delivery of high-capacity optical transmission over DSF fiber. DSF fiber, widely deployed throughout Japan, has proven to be a challenge in deploying high-capacity DWDM transport over long distances due to its low chromatic dispersion in the C-Band. As a result, operators have had to use expensive L-Band technology to achieve long-haul quality performance from DSF fiber.Infinera’s DTN-X platform offers long-haul 500-Gbps superchannels that feature what Infinera claims is world-class polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation performance (see “Infinera, Verizon report real-time PMD performance record”). Using this platform, Infinera demonstrated that it was possible to transmit 8 Tbps of superchannel capacity on the C-Band over 800 km of DSF. Infinera says this same capacity can be extended to well over 2,500 km when using polarization-multiplexed QPSK on the Infinera DTN-X with non-DSF fiber, highlighting the unique challenges of DSF in Japan.Infinera also showcased the FlexCoherent capabilities of the system, demonstrating the ability to software-select different modulation formats including polarization-multiplexed QPSK and BPSK to optimize both reach and capacity. This capability enables service providers to leverage their current infrastructure by deploying the latest multi-terabit, long-haul optical transport on existing DSF fiber. The demonstration also showed 100 Gigabit Ethernet service provisioned in less than 100 seconds.“This test truly demonstrates the value of the DTN-X platform to service providers with DSF assets,” said Kimitaka Sato, executive officer at Nissho. “In the past, service providers may not have been able to run even multiple 10-Gbps transmission over this kind of fiber. Infinera’s solution proves that we can run the very latest super-channel technology at 8 Tbps on DSF, which is impressive.”“This trial is unique because it not only achieves world-class reach and capacity over a very difficult type of optical fiber, it shows how quickly capacity can be turned up for service providers today,” said Dave Welch, Infinera co-founder, executive vice president and chief strategy officer.

Reliance Globalcom picks Ciena for 100G submarine cable upgrade
Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) says global carrier Reliance Globalcom has selected Ciena’s WaveLogic coherent optical 100G networking technology to upgrade its FLAG Europe-Asia (FEA) submarine network. The 100G technology will bring massive capacity increases to existing fiber cables on a route connecting Egypt and Jordan. As part of the network upgrade, Reliance Globalcom will deploy a 100G DWDM system with Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical line interfaces. Using the principles of Ciena’s OPn network architecture, the systems house says the upgrade will enable Reliance Globalcom to support the surge of high-bandwidth applications such as cloud computing, video conferencing, business continuity/disaster recovery, data center connectivity, and storage area networking, in addition to ever increasing Internet traffic. The network upgrade with 100G technology allows Reliance Globalcom to increase submarine bandwidth on this segment by 10X and enables the launch of 10 Gigabit Ethernet and OTU-2 services. The upgrade also enables Reliance Globalcom to provide 100 Gigabit Ethernet for their end customers as required.Ciena is also providing Reliance Globalcom with its network management software for streamlined service activation, fault management, and performance monitoring. The deployment also includes professional services via Ciena’s Specialist Services portfolio, including engineering, furnishing, and installation.“Ciena’s proven coherent optical technology gives us the ability to upgrade our existing submarine networks from 10G to 40G and 100G rates, and beyond, so that we can keep pace with our customers’ changing bandwidth requirements while leveraging our investments in fiber assets,” said Punit Garg, president and CEO, Reliance Globalcom. “We are already using Ciena coherent solutions to deliver 40G services on multiple, critical submarine routes, so when we decided to upgrade our FEA route to 100G, we knew Ciena was the right choice.”This deployment builds on a longstanding relationship between Ciena and Reliance Globalcom and its parent company Reliance Communications. Earlier this year, Reliance announced that it is using Ciena’s 100G platforms to power its European network. In 2011, the companies announced two 40G deployments on the Reliance Globalcom network – one to support a 5,000-km submarine link along two key routes connecting Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong, and the other to support a 6,400-km ultra-long haul submarine link connecting the UK, Spain, Italy and Egypt (see “Reliance Globalcom deploys Ciena 40G in ultra long-haul submarine network” and “Reliance Globalcom adds 40-Gbps coherent to FNAL submarine cable network”).
